The implementation of the innovative bio metric mobile phone registration system by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has given a much needed shove to the commercial imports of mobile phones.
The commercial imports of mobile phones and tablets have increased by 110 percent in the stretch of one year according to the facts and figures published by the media. The previous year the number of mobile phones imported was 9,564,424, while the 2019 statistics suggest the number has seen a massive increase to 19,834,465 smart phones.
The documents also show that there has been a significant decrease in illegal imports and the smuggling of mobile phones and other related tech goods.
The local smart phone markets have also recorded an increase of 72 percent in the mobile phone production. The government has accumulated custom duties of more than Rs. 1.27 billion on smart phones since the implementation of the bio metric phone registration. There have also been significant measures taken by the government to promote and increase local manufacturing of mobile phone devices.
The Pakistan Telecommunication authority (PTA) has effectively blocked millions of unregistered devices. The record of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers are also being used to apprehend criminals who are in possession of unauthorized devices. The new system has proved to be remarkable and has assisted the government in generating revenue from the legal import of cellular phones.
