According to the media reports seven Coptic Christians have been killed in an attack on bus carrying Coptic Christians. The gun men opened fire at the bus in central Egypt. A security official confirmed the attack in Minya province, adding that there were “dead and wounded”.
The militant groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda have targeted the Christian minority known as Copts in recent years. The Coptic Christians are 10 percent of Egypt’s 96 million populations. The ISIS has launched some major attacks on the churches in last few years. Coptic Christians had been living in Egypt peacefully for centuries. But attacks against them have increased in recent years.
The ISIS killed more than 40 people in twin church bombings in April 2017 and a month later shot dead almost 30 Christians in Minya province as they headed to a monastery on a bus. In December 2017 an IS killed nine people in an attack on a church in a south Cairo suburb.
In February 2018, the Egyptian army launched a major offensive against IS in the Sinai Peninsula, where the group has maintained a strong presence since the fall of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Morsi was elected president from the platform of Muslim Brotherhood.
Dubbed “Sinai 2018”, the military campaign has killed more than 450 militants, according to the Egyptian military. The militant groups have been using the Sinai Desert as their main base and also launched attacks against security forces. Many lives have been lost in this battle in the desert.
