On Thursday, Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi told National Assembly that 8,416 Pakistanis were detained in European and Arab countries in various crimes.
Pakistani missions made consular visits to meet regularly with Pakistani prisoners.
He claimed that legal assistance was provided, as allowed by the rules. The Pakistan Community Welfare and education Fund (PCW&EF), administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was used to expand legal assistance, including the payment of lawyers fees, fines and the cost of repatriation to Pakistani prisoners without resources.
Round about 9.6 million Pakistanis residing and working in abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was working to improve consular facilities in all missions.
A total of 36,514 prisoners from European and Arab countries were released during the last five years, at the end of their sentence, the payment of the fine, etc.
Saudi Government has recently furnished a list of 579 Pakistani prisoners who were supposedly released till date on this account.
The UAE Government also released 16,987 Pakistani prisoners from 2016 to 2019.
