Scientists have discovered a new agent named Berberine, which possess anti tumor properties and can be used for the treatment and prevention of tumor1.
Berberine is a bioactive compound isolated from several Chinese herbs2. BBR possess many pharmacological and biochemical properties and is much efficient against many diseases like; gastroenteritis, diarrhea, metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemia, diabetes & Alzheimer’s disease3-5.
Recent in vitro studies have shown that berberine can inhibits proliferation and migration of cancer cell and induces apoptosis in a variety of cancer cell lines6. Previously it has been reported that berberine could improve the lipid and sugar metabolism by altering gut microbiome. It can lower the blood lipid and glucose levels by working with short chain fatty acids of gut micorbiota7. It was also reported that lipid lowering effect was associated with global change in lipid, carbohydrates and amino acid metabolism8.
Scientists studied the effects of berberine in vitro and in vivo on tumor based on Sarcoma-180 cell line and Sarcoma-180 tumor-bearing mice. Additionally the difference and effects of gut microbiota between healthy mice and Sarcoma-180 tumor-bearing mice were studied. It further stimulated the development of natural plants derivatives for cancer prevention and treatment1.
For this purpose sixty female mice were randomly divided into 3 groups and each group had 20 mice. The effects of berberine on cell cycle and apoptosis of Sarcoma-180 (S-180) cell line were checked by flow cytometry. Immunohistochemical staining was done. Effects on gut microbiota were studied by 16S rDNA gene analysis.
It was found that berberine could induce apoptosis in sacrcoma-180 cells. Tumor index was significantly decreased and tumors treated with berberine showed more necrosis. The tumor-bearing mice had changed gut microbiome as comparison with healthy mice and berberine could modulate the gut microbiome of tumor-bearing mice.
Generally oral supplementation of berberine is used for curing gastroenteritis and diarrhea. It was also found that several metabolism-related pathways were also significantly changed in the three groups based on the result of KEGG analysis (bioinformatics software). The berberine as an “old” medicine for gastroenteritis and diarrhea may become a novel agent for the prevention and treatment of tumor.
