Supreme court bench led by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa will hear the review petition, filed by Qari Muhammad Salaam to overturn Aasia Bibi’s conviction in a blasphemy case, on January 29, SC said today (Jan 24). Qari Salaam filed the review petition in the case on November 1, 2018 at the Lahore registry of the apex court, and also sought the placement of Aasia’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL) till the judgement is reviewed.
The Supreme Court on October 30, 2018 acquitted Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death over blasphemy allegations. Announcing the judgment, the three-judge special bench ordered, “If Asia Bibi is not involved in any other case then she be released immediately.”
Aasia Bibi allegedly made three “defamatory and sarcastic” statements about the Holy Prophet on June 14, 2009 during an argument with three Muslim women (She was asked to fetch water, but the Muslim women objected, saying that as a non-Muslim she was unfit to touch the water bowl)., while the four of them were picking fruit in a field in Sheikhupura. The women later went to a local cleric and accused Bibi of blasphemy against the Holy Prophet. Bibi was convicted and sentenced to death in 2010 and has been in jail ever since.
