Resveratrol is an antioxidant nutrient which is used to enhance growth performance of gut functionality and structure. Scientist in this study has reviewed the modes of action, metabolism, the biological activities, natural sources and beneficial aspects/potential applications of resveratrol in animal and poultry nutrition, production and health1.
Resveratrol is a natural phenol mainly present in grapes, peanuts, berries, yucca and turmeric. It is also created naturally by many plants as a response to infection or injury which is induced by microbial pathogens such as fungi or bacteria2.
Previously many in vitro and in vivo studies have described its different biological impacts and protective effects including; anti-oxidant, cardio-protective, anti-atherogenic, anti-aging, anti-platelet aggregation, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-tumor, immune-modulatory, health-promoting activities as well as chemo-preventive and activities of metabolic rate3,4.
Various trials have been conducted on animals and poultry to establish the dependency and functionality of resveratrol and supplementation of it in animal and poultry diets. When oral dosage of resveratrol was supplemented to rats, no negative effects were found on biochemical and hematological parameters, growth performance, feed utilization, water consumption and histopathological changes5.
Studies conducted on mice and pigs showed that the serum IgG concentration was improved in the diet supplemented with resveratrol and different plant extracts such as cinnamon, thyme and oregano compared to the control diet6,7.
Many studies have been carried out on experimental animals, these studies demonstrated that resveratrol supplementation to diet of rats, mice and human plays an important role to protect heart cells or cardiovascular system from free radical-induced cell death or from damage which occur through obesity and chronic hypertension8,9. It has also been demonstrated that resveratrol supplementation advances the activation of sirtuins which in turn is a major supplier to avert death of rat cardiac cells10.
It can be concluded that investigation of the modes of action of resveratrol such as pharmacological, nutritional and biological activities are crucial for successful farm animal and poultry management that may provide further understanding of the health and performance parameters in agriculture species.
