Toxic smog continued to blanket major cities across Punjab, including Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi, on Monday, leading the provincial government to impose a complete shutdown of markets and outdoor activities from 8pm until November 17.

A government notification was issued outlining that violations of these directives would result in penalties under the Punjab Environment Protection Act. All sports activities, exhibitions, and outdoor dining, except for religious gatherings, have been prohibited.

The notification stated that only department stores and grocery shops are exempt from the restrictions, with authorities set to take action against any violators.

Air Quality Index (AQI) of Major Cities

Multan recorded the highest AQI, reaching a concerning 950. Lahore's AQI was measured at 560, while Rawalpindi's AQI remained around 254.

Rising Cases of Smog-Related Diseases

Meanwhile, residents of Lahore are experiencing a surge in whooping cough, chest infections, and breathing difficulties, with reports of children being diagnosed with pneumonia.

In the past week, five major government hospitals have treated over 35,000 patients, primarily for eye irritation and skin-related conditions.

Motorways Shut Down Due to Smog

Meanwhile, several sections of the motorway were closed to traffic due to poor visibility. The M1 was shut from Peshawar to Rashkai, the M2 from Bhera to Kot Momin, the M3 from Lahore to Dar Khana, the M4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakim, and the M5 from Multan to Sukkur.

Safety Measures and Precautions

Environmental expert Ali Jabir cautioned that air pollution could severely impact women, children, and elderly individuals with heart conditions, as the air is filled with harmful chemicals. He recommended avoiding unnecessary travel and encouraged the consumption of hot drinks during this season for better health.

In response, the Punjab government has decided to install air purifiers across the region. Environment Director General Imran Hamid issued a notification, directing all shopping malls to equip their facilities with air purifiers to mitigate the effects of pollution.
