Soccer and triathlon are well known sports and their importance is significant regarding physical fitness. Soccer is the most renowned sport worldwide and its charisma can’t be denied. While; triathlon is a multiple stage contest; and the most popular forms of triathlon, include swimming, cycling and running. The shorter events, such as the Olympic distance (1500 m, 10 and 40 km) or the sprint triathlon (500 m, 5 and 20 km) are in demand among people particularly. Its competition duration ranges from 50-70 min to several hours in sprint events for the Olympic and long distance races. Therefore, top-level triathletes are characterized by a very high aerobic power (maximal rate of oxygen consumption) 1.
High aerobic demand in soccer is mandatory also; to provide power and energy in to provide quick recovery after a high-intensity activity2. For assessment of performance, soccer players and soccer coaches mostly rely on modern scientific approaches3. Assessment of physical fitness helps to evaluate and identify the areas of weakness and strength of the soccer players. Test to estimate morphologic attributes including body height, weight and percentage of body fat is performed and the most frequently used fitness test for soccer players is commonly known as (VO2max test )4.
VO2max is the maximal amount of oxygen that delivered and utilized during intense exercise. The standard method of assessing VO2max is through use of specialized metabolic measuring equipment and a widely used treadmill-based Bruce protocol, which has been routinely used with both athletic and clinical population5, 6. An experiment was performed to investigate the aerobic characteristics of Saudi triathlon and Saudi soccer players and to compare the aerobic power between both players using graded treadmill protocol.
For analysis; twenty two professional Saudi athletes including 11 Saudi triathlon athletes and 11 Saudi soccer players were selected. Their Mean±SD was calculated for age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat mass (%), body fat free mass percentage, cardiovascular parameter, including, absolute and relative peak oxygen consumption “VO2max” and maximal heart rate “HR max”. Data was checked and analyzed using independent sample t-test and SPSS software.
Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) was used in this clinical test trial. It revealed that aerobic power (expressed relative to body mass) of Saudi soccer players was almost close to values; reported in the literatures for soccer players and triathletes during exercise training as well. Degrees of aerobic achievements during both exercise tests were non-significant different between Saudi soccer player and Saudi triathlon.
