When the astronauts sent rock samples from the moon’s surface, they didn’t know that they were uniting Earth with bits of its early history.
The “moon rock” possibly hit the moon after an impact of some sort sent it from Earth years ago, according to research published.
The scientists suppose that a big comet or asteroid hit Earth and sent the rock up through the atmosphere and into space. This rock was able to make its way to the moon because it was three times closer to Earth at that time.
It has been found that the rock contains quartz, feldspar and zircon, which are very common on Earth but not so much on the moon. An analysis of the rock also exposed that it was created at temperatures associated with Earth and in an Earth-like setting combined with oxygen. It formed between 4 billion and 4.1 billion years ago about 12.4 miles below the surface.
