Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar reprimanded DG NAB Karachi Naseer Awan for ‘crossing limits and humiliating people’. “Aren’t you ashamed of bothering people without any reason? … you people are crossing limits … today your heads are down but have no shame,” Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said while hearing a petition against the NAB’s notice to senior lawyer Salman Hamid.
The NAB Karachi issued notice to senior lawyer Salman Hamid for filing a case. The NAB Karachi director general apprised the court that the notice was issued after Hamid lodged a case without prior permission of a suspect. On which, the CJP questioned the bureau’s motive behind investigation against the lawyer.
You issue notice when someone perform professional duty … you insult people by calling them in. Is this why the Almighty chose you? You show them around police lockups and then even the Supreme Court fails to spot them for the next six months,” he remarked.
Barring the NAB from summoning Salman Hamid for inquiry any longer, the chief justice said the lawyer could only be sent a questionnaire for investigation.
This case has once again showed that NAB authorities misuse their powers and harass the ordinary people. There is no mechanism to monitor and check the powers of NAB officials. The draconian NAB laws should be repealed with an independent accountability commission for across the board accountability.
If the NAB authorities can harass a senior lawyer in a blatant way then just think about the ordinary people. NAB needs to mend their ways to deal with people and should adopt human ways of investigating the cases.
