The country’s strong ally, China has welcomed Islamabad’s decision to extend the tenure Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa. The statement was made by Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang during a routine press conference on Wednesday.
“General Bajwa is an extraordinary leader of [the] Pakistan Army,” he told reporters. “He is [an] old friend of [the] Chinese government and army.” The Chinese official also praised the army chief for “positive contributions” towards Islamabad-Beijing ties.
Expressing complete confidence in the army chief, Shuang underscored China’s belief that the “Pakistan army will continue to make contributions to upholding Pakistan sovereignty and security interests and regional peace and stability” under the leadership of General Bajwa.
Government has granted an extension of three years in service to incumbent Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa. A notification issue by the Prime Minister Office said that the step has been taken in view of regional security environment. His extension will start from the day of his retirement.
