The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday (Dec 20) has reserved its verdict on plea seeking bail of anchorperson and former chairman of Pakistan Television (PTV) Dr Shahid Masood in a corruption case pertaining to the state television. During the hearing the court was informed that Dr Shahid Masood is under arrest while the other suspects are on bail and returning the money. “Suspect Kashif Rabbani has returned Rs10.3 million while suspect Roshan Mustafa Gilani has returned Rs0.8 million,” PTV’s counsel said.
Further, the officials of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) told the court that “No evidence has been found regarding Dr Shahid Masood taking money and there is no witness statement in this regard either”. Following this, the court reserved its decision on the anchorperson’s bail plea.
Dr. Shahid Masood, a well-known anchor of private news channels was arrested by FIA from the premises of Islamabad High Court on corruption charges. He was accused of being involved in the embezzlement of Rs38 million (3.8 crores) from state-run broadcaster Pakistan Television. He served as Managing director of PTV during the PPP government. According to the prosecution, Dr Shahid Masood had signed an agreement with a fake company to negotiate with the Pakistan Cricket Board for grant of rights to the state owned PTV for coverage of cricket matches played in Pakistan when he was the MD of PTV. Because of the agreement, the PTV had to face heavy financial losses.
