The federal government has brought about a major policy shift regarding travelers bringing in cell phones under the personal baggage rules as travelers bringing even a single mobile phone from abroad, will pay tax on it. Travelers will have to pay up to Rs31,000 for a phone costing more than $500.
As per new rules, passengers will have to pay tax duty on mobile phones if they are coming from abroad and tax will be applicable from July 1. Officials said that, for bringing a mobile for the first time, it should be registered. In case of failure to do so, the mobile phone will work on one sim for only a period of 60 days and if remains unregistered, then it will be blocked.
Earlier, the government had announced that those coming to Pakistan will be allowed to bring only 5 cellphones per year while just one of them will be customs free, but now tax will be applicable on even single mobile.
