Regulation of various processes in the human body leads to continued functioning. Disruption in the processes at any level leads to development of diseases. Normal functioning of the human body is termed as its physiology. Its thorough study helps understand disease processes. Knowledge of physiology and various diseases guides the pharmaceutical action plans.
A multitude of diseases are caused by abnormality of a number of abnormalities in physiology. The pharmaceutical action is then directed at the specific abnormalities. Restoration of a single disruption corrects the abnormal disease process.
The field of pharmaceuticals is continuously developing. It surged with modernization of technology and medical science. Before it’s establishment, mankind relied on natural resources for remedial purposes.
Many naturally occurring plants have therapeutic properties. Such plants have been traditionally used for medicinal purposes. This tradition dates back to ancient times. Many developing countries still use raw materials from plants for direct remedial effects.
With the help of scientific research, natural compounds derived from plants are incorporated into synthetic products for their different benefits. Plant derived compounds are used in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals industries. Secondary metabolites like terpenes, phenols and alkaloids have anti-mutagenic properties.
Plant derived compounds are increasingly being used in the treatment of chronic conditions. Diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension and heart diseases are affected greatly by lifestyle changes.
Allopathic medicine using pharmaceutical agents treats aggressive diseases to a large extent. However, chronic diseases like DM are managed better using preventive measures. Naturally occurring plant derived compounds play a great role in this process.
DM is caused by either reduced production or effect of insulin depending on its type. Type 2 DM is more prevalent in older populations. Large part of its management involves preventive medicine. Uncontrolled DM can damage multiple organs leading to other chronic diseases like hypertension and kidney failure.
Ojochenemi Ejeh Yakabu and his team studied the effects of Adansonia digitata (AD) extracts on Diabetic wistar rats. DM is induced using Alloxan. The team conducted experiments from May, 2018 to January, 2019 at Federal University Wukari, Nigeria. The experiments included study of effects of ethanol extracts on 25 Wistar rats. The research concluded its beneficial effect on the disease process of DM. The researchers published their findings in the Journal of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
