Former senior military officers, Brigadier (retd) Raja Rizwan and Doctor Wasim Akram, who were awarded death sentence on espionage charges, have challenged their convictions in the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench. As per details, Brigadier (retd) Raja Rizwan’s wife Nadira Batool and Dr. Wasim’s father have submitted the petition on behalf of both convicted military officers.
Justice Mirza Waqas Rauf of Rawalpindi bench have accepted their petitions for initial hearing and ordered Attorney General Pakistan, Home Secretary Punjab and Secretary Defence to submit their replies in two weeks.
The counsel of the petitioners, Brig (retd) Muhammad Wasif Khan, pleaded that after punishments by Army Chief, accused were handed over to authorities in Lahore’s Adiala Jail on June 1 adding that his clients were worried that they could be executed at any time.
General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) had endorsed punishment to two Army and one civil officer on the charges of espionage/ leakage of sensitive information to foreign agencies prejudice to the national security.
The officers were tried under Pakistan Army Act (PAA) and Official Secret Act by separate Field General Court Martial (FGCM) for separate cases.
Punishment awarded include:-
• Lieutenant General Javed Iqbal (Retired) – Awarded 14 years rigorous imprisonment.
• Brigadier Raja Rizwan (Retired) – Awarded Death Sentence.
• Doctor Wasim Akram (Employed at Sensitive Organization) – Awarded Death Sentence.
