PTI is all set to retain its popularity and domination in Peshawar district. PTI expected to win 3 out 5 national assembly and 8provincial assembly seats from Peshawar. PTI swept the elections from Peshawar district in 2013 as it won all four national and 9 out of 10 provincial assembly seats. PTI won all the seats with big margins in 2013. But this time it is facing very tough competition from resurgent ANP and MMA. PPP and PML-N are not in the competition yet.
The interesting factor is that all the five national assembly candidates of PTI are new comers. None of them contested the elections in 2013 as PTI candidates. All the candidates joined PTI from different parties. This factor might create problems for PTI candidates. There is lot of resentment over the party tickets.
Peshawar is no more the first constituency in Pakistan as NA-1 always associated with Peshawar. But in the new delimitations, Chitral has been declared as NA-1 constituency. Peshawar has got one additional National Assembly seat and three more provincial assembly seats compared to 2013. Peshawar now has constituencies NA-27 to NA-31. PTI is facing stiff competition in NA-29 and NA-31 constituencies.
The veteran politician and senior ANP leader won most of the elections from NA-1 constituency. He even defeated Benazir Bhutto in 1990 from this constituency. Now Ghulam Ahmed Bilour is contesting from NA-31 Peshawar5 .
This time PTI put former MNA of PPP Noor Alam khan from NA-27. He is facing tough time from former advisor to prime minister, Asma Alamgir of PPP, former MPA Sobia Shahid of PML-N, Tahir Nadeem from ANP and Haji Ghulam Ali from MMA. PTI has an edge in this constituency.
In NA-28, Arbab Amir Ayub is PTI candidate and he has clear edge in this constituency against Shafi Akbar of ANP, Sabir Hussain Awan from MMA, and Muhammad Intikhab Khan of PML-N.
In NA-29, Ameer Muqam of PML-N, Arbab Kamal Ahmad of ANP, Nasir Khan Musazai from PTI, Naeem Jan of MMA is competing against each other in this constituency. Ameer Muqam has the lead in this constituency. PTI candidate Nasir Musazai was the PML-N candidate in 2013 elections but recently joined PTI. Arbab Kamal is also enjoying considerable support in this constituency.
IN NA-30, Arbab Alamgir Khan of PPP, Arbab Najibullah from MMA, Sher Ali Arbab from PTI, Muhammad Alamgir Khalil of ANP and Muhammad Junaid of PML-N are vying for this constituency.
PTI is facing stiff competition from Ghulam Bilour of ANP in NA-31 this time. There are other candidates in the run but real contest is between Bilour and PTI candidate.
In the last general election, PTI won all the National Assembly seats in Peshawar. PTI chief Imran Khan was elected MNA from NA-1 defeating ANP stalwart Ghulam Ahmad Bilour Hamid ul Haq was elected from NA-2 beating Maulana Saeed Jan and Arbab Najibullah. Sajid Nawaz of PTI was elected MNA from NA-3 defeating Haji Ghulam Ali of JUI-F and Iqbal Zafar Jhagra of PML-N, now the governor of KPK, while Gulzar Khan was elected MNA after winning against Nasir Musazai of PML-N, Sabir Hussain Awan of JI and Arbab Kamal Ahmad of ANP.
Ghulam Bilour of ANP, however, staged a comeback and won NA-1 from PTI’s Gul Badshah when it was vacated by Imran Khan. PTI’s Arbab Amir Ayub won NA-4 in the by-polls after Gulzar Khan died last year.
In 2008, Ghulam Bilour was elected from NA-1, Arbab Alamgir Khalil of PPP from NA-2, Noor Alam Khan of PPP from NA-3 and Arbab Zahir of ANP from NA-4. The ANP-PPP alliance also ruled the province from 2008-2013.
The MMA had swept the 2002 general election by winning all the four national assembly seats in Peshawar. Shabbir Ahmad Khan was elected from NA-1, Maulana Rehmatullah from NA-2, and Qari Fayyaz from NA-3 and Sabir Hussain Awan from NA-4. MMA formed its government in KP and ruled for five years.
From 1988 to 1997, PPP and ANP dominated Peshawar. Ghulam Bilour, late Arbab Jehangir Khan Khalil and Arbab Saadullah were elected MNAs from Peshawar in 1997. Earlier in 1993, Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Arbab Jehangir and Arbab Mohammad Zahir were elected to the lower house of parliament from the city.
Ghulam Bilour defeated Benazir Bhutto Shaheed on NA-1 in 1990. Arbab Zahir was elected from NA-3. In 1988, Aftab Ahmad Sherpao defeated Ghulam Bilour on NA-1. However, he vacated the seat after becoming the chief minister. Ghulam Bilour won the seat for the first time in by-polls after it was vacated by Aftab Sherpao.
