Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry and Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi on Thursday, attended the conference, with the theme “National Security, Nation Building and Mass Media”, in which they talked about regulation and role of of media in national security.
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, in his speech said that government wants to regulate social media. “This [regulating social media] will not be possible until we have a relationship with international giants like Google and Facebook,” he said. “We are trying to merge them and make one authority which will coordinate with international bodies. In the future domestic regulation will be irrelevant and international regulation relevant,” he added. “We need to evaluate that universities which are running such a large media departments will there be jobs in the future for these students.”
While talking about regulation of social media Shehryar Afridi said that media should play a positive role to protect national security. “The media has to play its role when it comes to national security,” Mr Afridi said. “Disinformation is being spread about me and the government, especially since I started taking initiatives against corrupt elements,” Shehryar Afridi said in a seminar organized by Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).
