To solve the issue of forced disappearances in the country, the PTI government has decided to introduce legislation on this important issue. Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari has said that the Ministry of Human Rights has drafted ‘disappearance enforced bill’ which would be enacted soon, however, the countrywide legislation takes a lot of time as bill get stuck in different ministries. She made this revelation talking to state owned news agency APP. She further said that there are three more bills prepared namely corporal, custodial and anti-torture bill and disability bills.
The minister said despite skeptics and beyond, “I trust Prime Minister Imran Khan to deliver on his commitment to rule of law, Constitution and defense of state institutions as well as to human rights guaranteed in the Constitution –not just in present but on the issues like ‘Enforced Disappearance.’
We are committed to ensure the basic rights of our citizens in pursuance to our Constitution and International commitments,” she added. She also discussed the various human rights-related issues including the rights of women, children, and minorities.
Some people used the issue of missing persons and enforced disappearances to malign the state institutions and specially secret services of the country. There is a wrong perception in some quarters that every missing person and forced disappearance is the work of intelligence agencies. There are many reasons that need to take into consideration. This bill can help to overcome this prolonged issue. Prime Minister Imran Khan was very vocal on this issue while he was in opposition.
