The federal cabinet has decided to file a review petition against Election Commission of Pakistan’s recent decision declaring PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz eligible to hold the office of Vice President of the party.
This was announced by Special Assistant to the PM Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan while addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting. She said Maryam Nawaz is a convicted person and cannot hold office of a political party under the law.
The Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday (Sep 17) dismissed a petition seeking the disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Maryam Nawaz can stay on as vice president of the PML-N, the verdict of the election commission said. A three-member commission of the ECP had earlier reserved the verdict in the disqualification on Monday.
The petition was filed in May last year by the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers including Farrukh Habib, Maleeka Bokhari, Kanwal Shauzab and Javeria Zafar In a petition, PTI lawmakers contended that Maryam could not hold any party position as she was convicted by a court of law on July 6, 2018, in a corruption case (Avenfield reference), filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
