President Dr. Arif Alvi, in exercise of powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 54 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, has summoned the session of the National Assembly on December 4 at 4:00 p.m. in Parliament House.
As per media reports, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is likely to table a bill to amend the Army Act. Earlier, in light of government’s undertaking, Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday (Nov 28) granted six months conditional extension to Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Jvaed Bajwa.
A three-member bench — comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Mian Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah — announced the much-anticipated verdict after being assured by the government that parliament will pass legislation within six months.
The order, read out by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, ordered the parliament to introduce legislation for appointment of army chief under Article 243. The order stated regarding the Article 243: “Article 243 of the Constitution clearly mandates that the Federal Government shall have control and command of the Armed Forces and the supreme command of the Armed Forces shall vest in the President.”
