The government of Pakistan is making all the efforts to make Gwadar port as the centre of economic activities to uplift the people of coastal best of Baluchistan. The strategically located Gwadar deep water sea port is going to play important role in the future development of Pakistan. The Chinese government is also playing active role in the development of infrastructure in Gwadar. The plan to build a new international standard modern Gwadar airport is underway. The airport will be spread on 4300 acres and will cost $246 million.
The initial spadework has been completed for this airport. The construction of runways and main terminal building is most likely to start in March- April 2019. Both the Chinese and Pakistani governments are finalising the modalities to start construction work. The Chinese government will provide the financial resources to build this airport. China will provide a grant to construct this airport.
The work plan and design has been approved and the construction work would be started in March or April 2019. The soil testing on the land that began in January 2018 has been completed through 300 boreholes made on various locations.
The grant agreement was signed in May 2017 and the name of the airport would be New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) that would be capable of handling a combination of ATR 72, Boeing B-737 and Boeing B-747. The estimated cost is 246 million dollar and the executing company would be Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
It will be the biggest airport of Pakistan. In comparison to other airports like Karachi Airport (3,700 acres), Islamabad International Airport (3,600 acres), Lahore Airport (2,800 acres), the Gwadar Airport will be built on 4,300 acres. It is most likely that the government will announce to start construction work on Gwadar International airport in February. Once completed, this airport will serve as the main hub of cargo shipments in the area.
