Dr. Shireen Mazari, federal minister for human rights and senior leader of PTI, finally realised the mistake or rather blunder in the appointment of PTI leader Iftikhar Lund as focal person in Sindh. The minister should be criticised and appreciated as well at the same time.
She must be criticised for appointing a person as a focal person who involved in gross violation of human rights. Why the ministry did not scrutinised the record of Iftikhar Lund before appointing him as focal person. It showed the loopholes and weaknesses in the system. This appointment raised serious concerns about the intentions of the PTI government regarding human rights. It took PTI government and minister to realise the mistake.
But she must be appreciated for openly accepting the mistake and rectifying it. She took the bold decision to remove him from the position of focal person. She finds the courage to accept the mistake and then corrected it. Well done madam minister. But she should look into the mechanism of appointments in her ministry. The damage has already done. Her own reputation was put on at stake.
The Federal Minister for Human Rights on re-assessment and in the light of new evidence has withdrawn the notification issued by the Minister’s Office vide no. F. 1(24)/2018/Min (HR), dated 10th July, 2019 regarding making of Mr. Iftikhar Ahmed Khan as a focal person on the issues of Human Rights in the province of Sindh with Immediate effect”.
The appointment was criticized heavily as the local PTI leader was found to have been involved in treating his employee in an inhumane manner. “I also wish to express my regret over the earlier notification,” the minister said.
This appointment send completely wrong message. How a human rights violator can be appointed to protect the human rights of ordinary people. This appointment raised serious questions on the commitment of PTI government on human rights.
The first information report (FIR) filed under Sections 324 (attempt to commit murder), 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person), 147 (punishment for rioting) and 143 (punishment for being member of unlawful assembly) named Iftikhar Lund as one of the perpetrators.
Iftikhar Lund torture and humiliate his driver. He then forced him to make out of court settlement. He used his position, power and influence to get away from any punishment because he belongs to a privileged family. He belongs to the same class of feudals who treated their employees as slaves. For them, the poor has no honour, dignity and respect.
They know that they are above the law. They know that there are two Pakistan even in Naya Pakistan of Imran Khan. One Pakistan is for the powerful and rich and other Pakistan for the poor, downtrodden and working people.
