In a violation of Indus Water Treaty, India has blocked the free flow of water from three eastern rivers to Pakistan. This Indian move will further heighten the already existing tension between two nuclear-armed neighbours. India is making every effort to inflict damage on Pakistan. India is using water as a weapon to sabotage the Pakistani agriculture.
India’s Union Minister of State for Water Resources Arjun Mehghwal announced the move at an event in Rajasthan on Sunday. He said New Delhi had stopped 0.53 million acre-feet of water from the three eastern rivers flowing into Pakistan. Whenever Rajasthan or Punjab needs it, that water can be used for drinking and irrigation purposes.”
In response, the Pakistani Indus water Commission officials said that “The Ministry of Water and Power is reviewing India’s measure to stop water from flowing into Pakistan. As per the Indus Water Treaty, India cannot stop water from flowing into Pakistan and if they do so then we will move the International Court for Arbitration,” “New Delhi has continuously been involved in water aggression. India’s Indus Water Commission did not appraise Pakistan regarding the move to stop the flow of water,” the officials added.
However, in December last year, Pakistan’s Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Dr Muhammad Farugh Naseem said India had started using water from the western rivers for industrial purposes. “The treaty had ensured that India could only use water to generate electricity from these rivers if it did not disrupt water supply to Pakistan,” he said.
Under the agreement signed in 1960, Pakistan has unrestricted access to the western rivers Indus, Jhelum and Chenab, while New Delhi enjoys the same authority over the eastern rivers Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.
Expressing Islamabad’s concerns over India’s plans to build dams over Jhelum and Chenab, he had urged the World Bank and other international players to play their due role. The minister had called out India for repeated threats to revoke the treaty, reminding New Delhi that the agreement could only be terminated with mutual consent.
