Indian army Chief General Bipin Rawat loves to get media attention for making controversial statements and claims. He likes to remain in the media limelight. General Rawat likes to give threats and bastions to Pakistan in media talks. He has been criticised for making unnecessary statements and public comments on different issues in the past. Hehas landed into trouble after making a comment on the combat roles of the women in the Indian army. The women activists outraged by his comments.
In an interview with Indian media outlet, General Rawat gave the reasons women are not suitable or fit for combat roles in the army. He also said that even if he was ready to accept female officers on the front line, the army was not.
While explaining what the statement, he said that most of the jawans come from villages and may not accept a woman commanding them. Another reason was that women would feel uncomfortable at the front line and accuse the jawans of ‘peeping’ at them while they will change clothes. He also said that the woman could also die in the combat roles and India was not ready to see their bodies returning from the war zone.
He added that when women get pregnant, the army will not be able to give those 6 months of maternity leave. He also said that if women complained in Delhi about harassment from males then how they can survive on the borders and war zones.
The social media erupted with condemnation of army chief’s comments. The women rights organisations have raised serious questions about this statement. His statement has sparked outrage on the social media platforms.
