Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party Chief Mehbooba Mufti was arrested moments after Bharatiya Janata Party-led Indian government scrapped, Article 370 of the Indian constitution. The article gave Kashmir its own constitution and decision-making rights for all matters except for defence, communications and foreign affairs.
Minutes after Mehbooba Mufti was arrested, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah was also taken into custody. Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference leaders Sajjad Lone and Imran Ansari have also been arrested. Some more arrests have been made, officials said, without sharing details.
Mehbooba Mufti has been taken to Hari Niwas – guest house. She was put under house arrest last night as the authorities clamped restrictions under Section 144 of CrPC. The reason for her arrest was not immediately known.
Earlier in the day, Mufti and Abdullah had condemned BJP’s revocation of the special constitutional status of occupied Kashmir.
“Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decision of Jammu and Kashmir leadership to reject two nation theory in 1947 & align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of Government of India to scrap Article 370 is illegal & unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K,” Mufti said in the first of many tweets.
On the other hand, Former Chief Minister of India occupied Kashmir Omar Abdullah termed the unilateral move by the Indian government to revoke Articles 370 and 35A as a total betrayal of the trust that the Kashmiri people had reposed in India when the state acceded to it in 1947.
