Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif lambasted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday (August 9) for arresting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz from Kot Lakhpat prison. “Could the NAB team not have arrested Maryam from Raiwind or intercepted her car?” Shehbaz asked while delivering a fiery speech on the floor of the Lower House.
He termed Maryam Nawaz’s arrest a “distraction tactic” as he accused the government of resorting to such measures in an attempt to hide its “failed” policy on the Kashmir dispute. “My niece Maryam was once again arrested in front of her father”, said the former Punjab chief minister, adding that the incident from July 13, 2018, when the father-daughter duo had been arrested in front of the other been recreated yesterday”.
A day earlier, Nawaz Sharif’s personal physician Dr. Andan Khan claimed that the PML-N vice president was arrested in the presence of her father and teenage daughter. “Maryam Nawaz arrested inside the Kot Lakhpat Jail in front of her ailing father. She was on weekly scheduled visit to see her father,” he tweeted.
“The decision to arrest Maryam in front of her father and his grandchildren is shameful and highly regrettable,” Shehbaz, said in a statement, stated that the decision to arrest Maryam in front of her father was “highly regrettable”. Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Imran Khan, the opposition leader added that the government should focus on protecting the Kashmiri population instead of targetting the opposition.
