Parks are a great place to meet friends, bring the kids and enjoy the outdoors. Visitors want to see as much of nature and as little garbage as possible. But maintaining a clean park is becoming more and more difficult. Parks departments, which have long struggled with a lack of adequate funding, have been hit in recent years with the decline in government spending, especially at the local level. The consequence of these cuts has led to less frequent maintenance and litter lingering around. When you couple that with an increase in park visitors, a spike in the unsightly trash is unavoidable.
As a park and recreation manager, keeping your park clean can feel like a continual uphill battle. But visitors expect their parks to look at least somewhat tidy, so managers have to find creative solutions to the problem.
