According to researchers who studied the impact of surgical masks on the transmission of other corona and flu viruses, face masks may help to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the report, sufferers ‘use of surgical masks substantially decreased the number of flu viruses detectable in droplets released by respiration and coughing.
It also the number of seasonal coronaviruses observable as suspended microdroplets, or aerosols in the air-among the causes of common colds. The research failed to analyze the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2.
Further work is required to decide if masks are explicitly capable of preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission,” the scientists said.
The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, coincides with the COVID-19 respiratory disease pandemic which has infected over a million people worldwide and killed over 53,000 people.
