The joint investigation team (JIT) Wednesday (March 20) recorded the statement of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at the Kot Lakhpat jail. The team remained at the prison for approximately two hours. On Monday, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president and former chief minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif appeared before the JIT.
Earlier Accountability Court’s judge Judge Arshad Malik during the hearing on a plea filed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Muhammad Iqbal seeking court permission to visit Nawaz Sharif to record statements of Former PM in model town incident, gave permission of Punjab police to meet Nawaz. Model Town investigators had recorded the statements of the PML-N leaders named in the FIR — Rana Sanaullah, Khawaja Asif and Pervaiz Rashid. Shehbaz Sharif, the then chief minister of the province, has already recorded his written statement.
The Model Town Massacre was a violent clash between the Punjab Police and Pakistan Awami Tehreek activists on 17 June 2014, in which at least 14 people were killed and over 100 were injured by police gunfire. The clashes were started when the police launched an operation to remove the barriers from the road leading to the offices of Minhaj-ul-Quran and the residence of PAT founder Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri in Model Town, Lahore.
