Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry in a press briefing held after a federal cabinet meeting has announced the government’s decision to put Pakistan Peoples’ Party Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur and the PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, on the Exit Control List (ECL) in connection with ongoing mega money laundering case against him.
“I hope Zardari will take JIT seriously. This is not the old Pakistan where people will be compromised,” he said. “The independent accountability process will continue.” The information minister said that polls for the FATA’s provincial assembly will be held in June. “FATA will get constitutional rights. We wanted to take FATA into the mainstream as soon as possible,” he said.
The FIA is investigating 32 people including Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur, in relation to money laundering from over 20 ‘benami’ accounts, opened in 2013, 2014 and 2015 for transactions worth billions of rupees. Zardari’s close aide Hussain Lawai was arrested in July in connection with the probe. The amount, according to FIA sources, is said to be black money gathered from various kickbacks, commissions and bribes.
