There are more than 3000 public schools in Karachi and most of them lack basic facilities. A close look at the Karachi schools revealed the pathetic conditions of public schools. The respective governments ignored the state owned schools which provide cheap education to children of poor families. Most of the poor population in Karachi lives in shanty towns called Katchi Abadis.
These Katchi Abadis lack education, clean drinking water and health facilities. So the most schools lack the facility of clean drinking water. Nearly 2500 schools are without clean drinking water. The Sindh Water Commission formed by Supreme Court to check the quality of drinkable water stored in water reservoirs in Sindh.
This commission was headed by former Supreme Court judge justice Amir Muslim Hani also checked the quality of drinking water supplied to public schools. The commission found out that 2500 schools in Karachi are supplied contaminated water. The commission asked the government Sindh more than a year ago to provide clean drinking water to thousands of students studying in public schools.
But the government has not so far taken any action to improve the situation. The students of hundreds of schools are still drinking the contaminated water. The contaminated water is the main cause different diseases. The diseases like Hepatitis B and C and kidney problems are result of contaminated water.
The Sindh government and education department should take necessary measures to improve the situation. Clean drinking water is not a luxury but a basic need.
