The ongoing investigation of the murder of anchor Mureed Abbas revealed link to money laundering against suspect Atif Zaman and the deceased. According to police officials, more than 80 people, including media personnel, were found to be involved.
Police has acquired the data of 35 persons from the call record of Atif Zaman. SSP investigation Tariq Dharejo said that accused Atif is involved in tyres smuggling and several TV anchors and journalists have invested money with him. Some people have been called upon today to answer some questions.
The police has registered two cases of anchorperson Mureed Abbas and his friend’s assassination on a business dispute by his business partner Atif Zaman, who shoot at himself but survived. The initial probe revealed that the dispute between deceased and accused Atif Zaman was on the amount of Rs 200 million.
According to the police report, the defence area had echoed with firing at about 8:45 pm when Atif opened fire on private TV anchor Mureed Abbas and his friend Khizer near Chuta Bukhari, in resultant both, died. After the incident, the family members of Mureed including his spouse Zara Abbas, who is currently working as a news anchor, and shifted the body of the deceased to hospital.
The wife of the deceased said, in her video statement, that Atif Zaman had killed her husband. “When police raided Atif home for his arrest he shot himself, however he rushed to the hospital where he survived and recorded his statement alleging that Mureed Abbas and his friends were blackmailing him and he killed them after teasing by them,” police said adding that the accused statement is not final as his further statement will be recorded after his health recovery.
It has been claimed that Atif Zaman had reached his tolerance threshold after constant demands from his investors for their due payments from the Tyre business which had driven him to the extreme limits of committing the heinous crime.
