ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has launched an investigation into a New York property purportedly held by Asif Ali Zardari, the former president and leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Zardari has requested pre-arrest bail in the case at the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The former president was notified by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) that he had not reported his ownership of the New York residence in Pakistan.
In the notification, the NAB also stated that it was unable to collect records indicating that any legal funds were sent from Pakistan to purchase the flat in New York.
According to the petition, the former president received the notice from the NAB on June 15 and requested time to respond. Zardari explained that he had asked for time to obtain information regarding the property.
The former president noted in the appeal, “There is a history of NAB targeting me.” “I have a number of problems for which I am receiving medical treatment,” he explained.
Zardari asked the high court to release him on bail pending the outcome of the case and to declare the NAB notice void.
Ali Zaidi has shared property tax bills from Zardari’s suspected New York apartment with Ali Zaidi.
The property tax invoices of a New York flat purportedly owned by the PPP co-chairperson were tweeted by federal minister Ali Haider Zaidi in 2018.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has filed a complaint with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) accusing Zardari of concealing his property in his nomination papers.
Khurram Sher Zaman and Firdous Shamim Naqvi of the PTI petitioned the ECP Sindh to take notice of the situation and disqualify Zardari as a member of the National Assembly. Only the ECP Islamabad, according to the provincial election commissioner, may take action.
The apartment’s address was listed as 524 East 72 Street, Apt 37F, NY, NY Manhattan 10021 in property paperwork tweeted by Zaidi. “@khurram2004 more info for your petition,” Zaidi tweeted, tagging Zaman in the tweet.
