The journalists working in Nawai Waqat and The nation newspapers staged protest and refused to work against the management of Nawai Waqat group for not paying the salaries. The media group’s management have not yet paid the media workers their salaries of last three months. The journalists working in both groups observed pen drop strike for several hours. This action forced the management to make the promise that one month salary will be paid in next five days and rest of the money will also be paid within short period of time.
The media workers forced to take this action because management was not even implementing the orders of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ordered the management of the Nawai Waqat group to pay salaries last month. The media workers are not highly paid and dependent solely on their wages to feed their families. When they are not paid their salaries for months then they face starvation and poverty.
The media workers worked very hard for their meager wages. But it is really very painful when they return home empty hands and pockets. They make false promises with their children and other siblings that they will get the salary very soon and they will bring medicines and other daily needs of a family. This is cruel that they are performing their duties but are being paid.
This action shows that unity and struggle is necessary to defend the rights and also to force the media owners to stop exploitation and other rights violations. It has become a norm that some media houses are paying the salaries of media workers on time. On the one hand, media owners blame the government for financial crunch and crisis but on the hand they are continuing to hire anchors on highest salaries.
They are not paying salaries to low paid reporters, cameramen, sub editors and columnists because of financial constraints but at the same time they are hiring anchors on millions of monthly salary. The media owners are using this so-called crisis as an lame excuse to retrench and sack journalists and delaying their salaries.
The Nawai Waqat group which is one of the oldest media house in the country has already closed down its TV channel Waqat News. This media group got advertisement of millions of rupees from the previous PML-N government. The media house should tell the facts that why this strong media house is facing financial crisis. The journalists worked very hard over the years to build this media house and they are not responsible for the current situation.
The media workers should not be punished for the crime that they never committed. The media owner should take responsibility for this situation and take necessary measures to resolve the problems faced by the media workers.
