Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz leader Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday (Dec. 25) was shifted to Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat prison from Adiala jail.
A court in Islamabad on Monday (Dec 23) sentenced the former prime minister to seven years in prison following Al-Azizia steel mills reference while he has been acquitted in the Flagship Investment reference. After hearing the decision Nawaz Sharif requested the court to send him in kot lakhpat jail.
The Punjab government had approved the provision of ‘better class’ jail facilities including mattress, a study table and chair in addition to a TV set and newspaper. A large number of PML-N supporters and workers gathered outside Kot Lakhpat jail to show their support for the former prime minister as he arrived at the premises and also cut a cake in front of the prison The home secretary said that Nawaz and his brother, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, who has been arrested in Ashiana Housimg scheme case, will share the same compound but different rooms at Kot Lakhpat prison,
Nawaz Sharif, in July 2017,was disqualified by the Supreme Court as it investigated revelations that came out of the so-called Panama Papers, leaked documents from a Panamanian law firm. The documents indicated that Mr. Sharif’s family owned expensive properties in London, but he was unable to explain how he was able to afford them. On July 06, an accountability court sentenced the former PM, daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar in Avenfield reference.
