Nawaz Sharif made an irresponsible and damaging statement in his recent interview. This misleading statement will damage the Pakistani cause. This statement is clearly against Pakistan’s interests. Since his ouster from power in July 2017, Nawaz Sharif is trying everything possible for him to malign the judiciary and army. The recent interview to the dawn is also the continuation of this malicious campaign against state organs.
Nawaz Sharif can score points against state institutions but it will hurt the national interest. Pakistan needs harmony and close cooperation between state institutions and political parties. But Nawaz Sharif surely wants confrontation and chaos in the country. This interview seems an attempt to provoke Pakistani army to take tough line and respond strongly. He has left the army no other option to take this statement seriously and respond strongly.
The purpose of this statement seems to be put more pressure on the state institutions to get some concessions in the ongoing trials in the accountability court. Nawaz Sharif wants to take personal revenge from the judiciary and the army for ousting him from power. Army always denied any involvement in the cases so far but Nawaz Sharif strongly believes that whatever is happening to him and his family is the result of military’s backing.
This statement shows that how far a person can go to settle his own score. Nawaz Sharif is angry that he was not allowed to complete his term as prime minister. But he forgets that he was elected prime minister for three times. He is the only politician in this country who served the country as the prime minister for three times.
Nawaz Sharif’s recent statement on Mumbai attacks will cause more damage to PML-N and Nawaz Sharif then the efforts of the opposition parties to weaken PML-N. Nawaz Sharif himself and PML-N will try to distance from this statement. Nawaz Sharif and PML-N will now try to put blame on the media. But the damage has already done.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has contradicted the official position of the Pakistani state. Pakistan has repeatedly denied its involvement in the Mumbai attacks. India has pointed fingers at the Pakistani premier intelligence agency. Pakistan always denied these Indian accusations. Both America and India accuse Pakistan for providing support to militants active in India and Afghanistan. This statement from Nawaz Sharif is the validation of such accusations.
Both India and America wants to malign Pakistani military to weaken it and to tarnish its image. Such statements from Pakistani politicians help the hostile countries to use it to serve their purpose. Pakistani army is the strongest institution of this country and a sign of national unity and pride. The hostile forces want to malign it to weaken it.
Nawaz Sharif is still living in 1999. He still thinks that peace with India is possible without realising that India is not at all interested in peace. Nawaz Sharif still thinks that army is a hurdle and an obstacle to achieve peace. But he has failed to realise the completely changed situation in the region. Pakistan is dealing with Modi’s India. It is not the Pakistani army which create hurdles in the peace process but it is on the contrary.
It is the India who really is not interested in peace process and normalisation of relations. India wants to make Pakistan as his subordinate state to establish its own hegemony in the region. Pakistan army will never accept such a situation. Pakistan wants peace and dialogue with India on equal terms.
But India now will use Nawaz Sharif’s statement as a charge sheet against Pakistani military and its intelligence services. India will intensify its attacks and accusation against Pakistan Army and intelligence services which are already under tremendous pressure from different sides. India will use this statement as a confession by a former prime minister of Pakistan. India now will launch a vicious propaganda against Pakistan on the basis of this statement that Pakistan is still using non-state actors to launch attacks inside India and Afghanistan.
Here is what Nawaz Sharif exactly said in his interview to leading Pakistani English Daily Dawn.
“Our narrative is not being accepted. Afghanistan’s narrative is being accepted, but ours is not. We must look into it. Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial?” said Nawaz while referring to the Mumbai attacks-related trials which have stalled in a Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court.
Nawaz Sharif in his own words made it clear that Pakistan allowed the non-state actors to cross the border to launch Mumbai attack. This is a serious statement with dire consequences. If Nawaz Sharif had the information and evidence that Pakistan allowed the militants to cross the border to launch that attack then why he did not took action or initiate inquiry into that matter.
Nawaz Sharif also accused Pakistan for not completing the trial of suspects allegedly involved in Mumbai attacks. But former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan who served in his cabinet for more than 4 and half years rebut Nawaz Sharif’s statement. According to him, India never showed seriousness to complete the trial and to provide evidence in this trial.
“Pakistan was subjected to heavy criticism over the Mumbai attacks,” Nisar said, in the backdrops of Nawaz Sharif’s recent interview. The former minister that India had used the Mumbai attacks to malign Pakistan. “I am privy to all aspects of the case as I was the interior minister,” he said. The probe into the case was being conducted by Federal Investigation Agency which comes under the Ministry of Interior.
Nisar also blamed India for his aggressive behaviour and refusing to cooperate during the investigation into the case. “The lack of cooperation by India was the biggest hurdle in the investigation. India wasn’t interested in a transparent investigation,” he said.
Nawaz Sharif could have discussed this issue in detail with Chaudhry Nisar to avoid this huge embarrassment. There is no justification of such hard hitting statement against our own institutions. Nawaz Sharif has made a big mistake. He should accept this gross mistake and publically apologised to the nation.
