The Home Department of Punjab on Thursday (Jan 3) constituted a new Joint Investigation Team (JIT) headed by Inspector General (IG) Motorways AD Khawaja, to investigate the model town massacre (2014), said a notification issued by Additional Chief Secretary Home Fazeel Asghar.
The other members of JIT includes Lt Colonel Mohammad Attique-uz-Zaman from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt Colonel Irfan Mirza from Military Intelligence (MI). Mohammad Ahmed Kamal, deputy director general of Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Qamar Raza, deputy inspector general (DIG) Police Headquarters Gilgit-Baltistan.
Earlier on On December 5, 2018, the Supreme Court had ordered the Punjab government to form a new joint investigation team (JIT) in the Model Town case.
The Model Town Massacre was a violent clash between the Punjab Police and Pakistan Awami Tehreek activists on 17 June 2014, in which at least 14 people were killed and over 100 were injured by police gunfire. The clashes were started when the police launched an operation to remove the barriers from the road leading to the offices of Minhaj-ul-Quran and the residence of PAT founder Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri in Model Town, Lahore.
