A five-member larger Supreme Court (SC) bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar on Wednesday has disposed of Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s (PAT) plea and ordered the Punjab government to form a new joint investigation team (JIT) in the Model Town case. The bench comprising Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Azmat Saeed, Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Mazhar Alam Mian heard the Model Town Case.
Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri said that “the victims of Model Town incident are waiting for the justice from past four years. The previous Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was formed without taking us into confidence”, he added. PAT chief Tahirul Qadri informed the apex court that “on the first day of the Model Town violence 10 people were killed and 71 injured. Qadri said according to their records, 510 people had been injured during the Model Town incident and the first FIR was lodged by the police”. He added that the first JIT was made on the police’s FIR. “Now it feels like the doors of justice have been opened,” Qadri said in court.
After the hearing, PAT Chief Tahirul Qadri spoke to journalists and said, “The court said that there was no other way but to form a JIT. The court’s stance was also supported by the Punjab government”.
Earlier Supreme Court of Pakistan has summoned Pakistan Muslkim League Nawaz leaders, Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Hamza Shehbaz, Saad Rafique, Chaudhry Nisar, Pervez Rashid, Khawaja Asif, Abid Sher Ali, Rana Sanaullah and Attorney General Punjab Ahmed Awais, in model town case as PML-N was the ruling party in the province at that time.
