Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday (April 2) finally broke silence on ongoing conflict between Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and senior party leader Jahangir Tareen and stopped cabinet members from issuing statements in media.
He reminded the ministers that both Tareen and Qureshi were senior leaders of the party and their opinion was valuable. The prime minister was quoted as saying that he himself gave Tareen an assignment on the agricultural policy. Adding that that it was up to him to decide who would attend meetings.
Earlier Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Monday (April 1) while speaking to the media in Lahore, criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Jahangir Tareen’s presence in official meetings and said that he will talk to Tareen.
“I will ask Tareen to think, whenever you sit in official meetings Marriyum Aurangzeb gets a chance to talk,” he remarked. “The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz raises questions that whether this is contempt of court. [The] PTI representative is mentally unable to accept this,” the foreign minister added.
Responding to Qureshi, Tareen said he was answerable only to Prime Minister Imran Khan and no one could stop him from serving Pakistan. Several PTI leaders including federal ministers Fawad Chaudhry and Faisal Vawda defended Tareen’s attendance at Federal Cabinet meetings.
