Indian opposition leader and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Monday (Feb 11) alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had stolen from the people of the Andhra Pradesh and given the money to industrialist Anil Ambani.
“The prime minister has stolen from the people from Andhra Pradesh and he has given that money to Anil Ambani. That is the fact of the matter,” Gandhi said at Andhra Bhavan in an apparent reference to the Rafale fighter jet deal with France. The government and Ambani have rejected Gandhi’s allegations of corruption in the deal.
“Mr Narendra Modi, wherever he goes, he goes to Andhra Pradesh, he lies about special status. He goes to the North-East, he tells another lie over there. He goes to Maharashtra and he tells another lie over there. He has got absolutely no credibility left,” Gandhi said. “I want to let you know that we are all standing together. We are going to defeat the BJP…,” he added.
On 31 January 2012, Indian Ministry of Defence announced that Dassault Rafale had won the MMRCA competition to supply Indian Air Force with 126 aircraft along with an option for 63 additional aircraft. Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman denied the allegations of procedural wrongdoing and said that approval from Cabinet Committee on Security had been obtained before signing of IGA.
