Major reshuffle in main stream opposition party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has raised many questions and confusions. From last few months reports were circulating about alleged deal between PML-N’s top leadership and the government allowing the party leader to get out of prison and travel abroad. But PML-N leaders are still continuously denying the deal rumors.
After getting bail Shahbaz had announced a “quick visit” to London on April 9 after his name was removed from the no-fly list on Lahore High Court orders. So once again rumors started circulating that he will not return to Pakistan burt PML-N representatives and Shehbaz himself termed rumors as baseless and Shehbaz said that he will return to Pakistan soon.
These rumors once again gathered pace and triggered a debate after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Thursday (May 2) nominated Rana Tanveer as Shehbaz Sharif’s replacement as Public Accounts Committee chairman and Khawaja Asif as parliamentary leader. Asif was nominated parliamentary leader by former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
Although no reasons were initially given as to why he stepped down, PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi while appearing on local news channel show said that decision was taken after Shahbaz “felt that he could not give the [requisite] time and do justice with this office”. Well not only opposition but PML-N supporters are seem to be confused and disappointed over sudden decision of reshuffling.
The reports further said that he took the decision after consulting with his elder brother Nawaz, adding that Shahbaz had not wanted to become PAC chairman and had only assumed the post after the insistence of the opposition and parliamentary advisory group.
Its worth mentioning that Shahbaz was elected as PAC chairman five months after the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) came to power as the ruling party was reluctant to give chairmanship of this vital parliamentary committee to the opposition leader contrary to the traditional practice. The PML-N had refused to nominate another member from the party to head the PAC, arguing that according to parliamentary tradition, the leader of the opposition should become chairman of this committee.
Many speculations and questions has been arrived that after a lot of struggle for this PAC chairmanship why Shehbaz Sharif stepped down? All the decisions made by PML-N are indication that Shahbaz is not expecting to return. Sources claimed that Shahbaz had his ticket cancelled for May 6.
If we deeply analyse the whole situation from last few months and especially PML-N’s silent attitude and may be a little bit soft stance towards ruling PTI government is indication that there is may be a deal between strong players of the country and PML-N. Nevertheless, the leadership isn’t in a mood to adopt an offensive strategy. A party leader explained this through the PML-N’s position on the DG ISPR presser. While the PPP and JUI-F were critical of the presser, the PML-N leaders were under instructions to either remain silent or endorse the claims and demands made by the ISPR chief about Pakhtun Tahaffuz Movement.
Initially no one knows about the fact and reasons behind the sudden PML-N’s reshuffle. People are just waiting for the next step of the party.
