The politician-cum-lawyer Dr. Babar Awan on Thursday (June 27) submitted the reply on behalf of Prime Minister Imran Khan to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over a show cause notice to Prime Minister. The notice was issued for visiting the NA-205 Ghotki-II constituency ahead of a bye-election. Babar Awan called on ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Mohammad and presented PM’s response to the notice sent to him by the federal body.
“Clause B-17 of the Election Code of Ethics, prohibits the President, premier, the parliamentarians and cabinet members from engaging in election activities during supplementary elections. The aforementioned clause does not bar anyone from offering condolence. It is on record that Sardar Ali Muhammad Khan Mahar, a member of the PM’s cabinet had recently passed away,” said the reply.
“We hold complete authority to initiate legal actions against the aforementioned person over registering a false and baseless statement against the premier,” he added.
Earlier Imran Khan had visited the bereaved family of deceased former Federal Minister Ali Muhammad Mahar in Ghotki. The ECP’s show cause notice came in response to a complaint by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in which, PPP candidate had challenged the prime minister’s visit to Ghotki and , termed it a political stunt to influence the outcome of the election. The regional election commissioner has sought response from the Prime Minister over the violation of its code of conduct.
