In a new study, scientists have reported that potassium nitrate (KNO3) concentrations have positive effects on the growth, primary metabolites (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) and secondary metabolites (phenolic, tannins and flavonoids) of green algae1.
Microalgae are promising for producing large variety of vital compounds like; lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins and beta carotene. Further used as feedstock for energy production, feed additives, food, cosmetics and medicine2.
Scenedesmus sp. (Scenedesmus obliquus), (Green Algae) contains high nutritional contents and bioactive metabolites. So, this specie is used in copious biotechnological applications3. Several anti-proliferation and anti-oxidants are also extracted from this specie which helps in health promotion and disease prevention4.
The growth rate, primary and secondary metabolites are influenced by nitrogen concentration of media. So the researchers determined the effect of different concentrations of potassium nitrate (KNO3) as a nitrogen source on the growth, phyto-chemical components, cholesterol reduction, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the green alga, Scenedesmus obliquus (S. obliquus)1.
Scenedesmus obliquus (Green Algae) was cultured in Kuhl’s medium and KNO3 (Potassium Nitrate) was added with different concentrations in the medium. The effect of five different nitrogen concentrations on protein and carbohydrates was determined. Antioxidant activity, total phenolic content (TPC) of alga extracts, cholesterol reduction and antibacterial activity were evaluated.
It was revealed that the best KNO3 concentration for algal growth and carbohydrate content is1.5 g L–1. High lipid content was obtained by lowering KNO3 content. The contents of dry alga extracted with chloroform: methanol and the extracted contents were determined by chromatogram and components were found.
It was established by the authors that Potassium nitrate limitation caused the highest effect on the total phenol content (TPC), increased antioxidant capacity, cholesterol reduction activity. The antibacterial activity was also found. Different concentration of nitrogen can enhance primary and secondary metabolites of Scenedesmus obliquus and significantly increases the production of bioactive compounds. A large amount research still needs to be done in such area.
