International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is being observed today (19 June) to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence, to honour the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world.
The day also aims to pay tribute to all those who have courageously devoted their lives to and lost their lives in standing up for the eradication of these crimes.
2019 also marks the 10-year anniversary of the establishment of the mandate of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict. Over the past decade, there has been a paradigm shift in the understanding of the scourge of conflict-related sexual violence as threat to international peace and security. People across the world should raise voice against this act of brutality to free the world from Sexual Violence Crimes.
