The 500th death anniversary of Painter, sculptor, inventor and unparalleled genius Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, who is better known to have painted the most parodied portrait, Mona Lisa is being observed today (May 2). Vinci has been regarded as the ‘Renaissance Man’ or even ‘Universal Genius’ by historians and scholars, for he is known to have credited with the invention of parachute, helicopter and tank.
Vinci was a true genius who graced this world with his presence from April 15, 1452 to May 2, 1519. He is among the most influential artists in history, having left a significant legacy not only in the realm of art but in science as well, each discipline informing his mastery of the other.
At the 17th General Assembly of the International Association of Art in Guadalajara, Mexico, in the year 2012, it was decided to celebrate World Art Day in honour of Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday. Leonardo da Vinci is considered a symbol of free expression, multiculturalism, tolerance, world peace and of course, a visionary in the world of arts and other fields.
