Several rockets hit near the United States embassy in Iraq’s capital early on Sunday, the US and Iraqi military officials said, the latest of a series of attacks against US assets in the country.
The rockets hit an Iraqi base housing US troops and other coalition forces in the heavily fortified green area of Baghdad, an area that houses foreign embassies and government offices.
The assault sent sounding warning sirens through the diplomatic complex, but it is unclear what was hit and how many rockets hit, said the American source and a nearby Western diplomat. There were no casualties and only minor damage, said a spokesman for the U.S. military.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Iraq’s military said three Katyusha rockets landed inside the Green Zone, while a fourth hit a different neighborhood, striking a logistics base operated by the Hashd al-Shaabi, or Popular Mobilisation Forces, a military network officially incorporated into the Iraqi state.
