The Supreme Court’s two member bench headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmed on Monday (Nov 18) barred the federal government from selling the land of country’s largest industrial unit, Pakistan Steel Mills. The court was hearing a case pertaining to payments of provident fund to the mill employees.
While stopping the federal government from selling the land of Pakistan Steel Mill (PSM), the court remarked that the land of Pakistan Steel Mill is owned by the people and cannot be sold. The court dismissed the government’s petition against the order to freeze the accounts of Ministry of Industry and Production.
The federal government’s application was dismissed on the basis of withdrawal. Justice Gulzar Ahmad expressed his resentment over the performance of PSM and remarked why not the court take notice of the issue of steel mill as the production of Pakistan steel mill is zero.
The government lawyer said that there was no funds to pay the provident fund, the government is selling the land to pay the salaries of the employees. Justice Gulzar Ahmed remarked that Pakistan Steel Mill was once a huge company, hundreds of steel mills was operated by Pakistan Steel Mill, Steel Mills. The mill has been destroyed to just to fill their own pockets.
The hearing was subsequently adjourned for 15 days.
