Supreme Court’s three-member bench, headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmad durin the hearing of a case regarding telecast of Indian material on Pakistani channels, has barred private channels from airing Indian material.
A counsel of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) also appeared in the court and stated, “Then federal government had drafted a policy in 2006 as per which only 10% of the content aired on local television channels could be foreign.” During the hearing, Justice Aijazul Hasan said that the high court had no authority to intervene in the matters of PEMRA. The hearing has been adjourned for an indefinite period.
Earlier last year a three-member bench of the top court, headed by the then Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar said “Indian content must be banned as they are shutting down our dams. Should we not ban their channels?” Nisar had said.
