On Wednesday, Supreme Court (SC) sought a response from the president of the Port Qasim Authority (PQA) within two weeks for contempt of court over environmental pollution caused by unsafe handling of coal.
A two-member bench, Judge Faisal Arab and Judge Sajjad Ali Shah, listened to the contempt of the court’s testimony in the Karachi Supreme Court. Petitioner Venu Adwani said environmental pollution is a serious problem for Karachi.
Saqib Nisar, former president of the court ordered the port administration to protect the coal. Despite the direction given by the court, coal is lying in the open air. Dangerous diseases are being created in the city because of unsafe coal handling. The coal is transferred from one place to another in open vehicles passing through Port Qasim.
“I complained about this problem to all the competent authorities, but no one wants to attend my complaints,” Adwani said.
The petitioner has requested that contempt proceedings be brought against the President of the PQA for ignoring the court’s instructions. The court asked for a response from the president in two weeks.
