Assistant commissioner of Ahmedpur East and comprising district officer of the industries department and personnel of special branch of police and other law-enforcement agencies recovered more than 55,000 sugar bags during raid at sugar mills godown owned by the Sharif family near Channigoth, about 70kms from here.
According to the sources, the team sealed the godown after seizing the sugar bags worth millions of rupees. None of the government departments officially issued any press release about the recovery of the allegedly hoarded sugar stock.
However, a spokesman for the district police officer, Jam Sajid, confirmed that the mills had been raided. He said that the godown was sealed after the raid. He said local police had not been informed of any action to take against the management of the mills. The district administration was handling the matter.
According to sources the stock was more than two seasons old and could not be used due to litigation.
The sugar mills at Channigoth belonging to the Sharif family had not operated during the recently-concluded crushing season, as it had been lying closed due to litigation.
